APPLICATION AND USE
Preparation PREVIOUSLY VARNISHED WOOD
If wood is in good condition clean with Yacht Line Super Cleaner. Sand smooth with 280-320 grit paper. Remove sanding dust with a dust wipe. In poor condition remove all previous coatings.
BARE WOOD Sand smooth with 80-180 grade paper and then 280 grade paper. Clean surface by brushing, dusting or wiping. If wiping with solvent then allow to dry completely before applying first coat of varnish.
Method Pour the amount you expect to use in a separate container. Avoid using direct from the can. Strain it through a paint strainer to ensure there is no contamination.
PREVIOUSLY VARNISHED WOOD: Apply 2-4 full coats, until a satisfactory finish is achieved. Sand between coats using 320-400 grade paper. Remove dust with a dust wipe.
BARE WOOD: Apply the first coat thinned 10% with Thinner No. 1. Apply a further 4-6 full coats until a satisfactory finish is achieved. Sand between coats using 320-400 grade paper. Remove dust with a dust wipe. Do not apply too thickly.
Hints Mixing Stir well before use.
Thinner Brush - YTA800 Thinner No. 1. Spray - YTA085 Thinner No. 3.
Ventilation and Humidity Control Apply in dry, well ventilated conditions. Avoid damp conditions. Cold weather retards the drying and humidity can spoil the gloss.
Airless Spray (Professional spray application only) Pressure: 170 bar/2500 psi. Tip Size: 0.33-0.41 mm/13-16 thou.
Conventional Spray (Professional spray application only) Pressure Pot: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi (gun pressure); 8-10 psi (pot pressure). Tip Size: 0.89-1.4 mm/35-50 thou. Siphon Cup: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi -gun pressure. Tip Size: 0.89-1.4 mm/35-50 thou.
Brush Always use a clean brush that is kept specifically for varnishing. Clean brushes before use.
Roller If rolling, use a thin nap roller and "tip-off" with a clean natural bristle brush.
Other Spray pressures listed are recommendations only. The applicator may use any settings which yield the best results for the individual spraying technique and current weather conditions. To enhance appearance of the bare wood and fill porous open grain, apply Interstain according to label directions and allow to dry overnight. To prevent skinning in the tin add a teaspoonful (5ml) of Thinner No. 1 on the surface before closing the lid.
Some Important Points: Never leave bare wood exposed for long periods of time as it will absorb moisture. Avoid using Schooner straight from the can as this will cause it to age prematurely and may introduce contamination to the can. Failure to follow proper dry times carefully will cause improper drying, wrinkling and loss of adhesion. Avoid painting in direct sunlight. Use above the waterline only. Only use recommended thinners. If maximum overcoating times are exceeded, sand with 280-320 grade paper. Formulated for exterior use.
Product temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 29°C/85°F.
Ambient temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 35°C/95°F.
Substrate temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 29°C/85°F.
Compatibility/Substrates Prime bare wood using Schooner thinned by 10% with Thinner No. 1. Can be used direct onto oily woods such as Teak and Iroko when thinned as for priming. Do not apply two part varnishes over Schooner.
